Un théatre était réservé et le décor construit. Sondheim lui-même écrivit un article dans le NY Times pour annoncer l'arrivée de Wise Guys. Mais ce workshop au New York Workshop, avec Nathan Lane et Victor Garber dans les rôles principaux, ne s'est pas révélé satisfaisant. Sondehim et Weidman n'aimaient pas le résultat et les producteurs pensaient qu'il fallait encore travailler au spectacle. Beaucoup pensère qu'il en était fini de 'Wise Guys'. Les vraies causes de cette débacle étaient nombreuses. Certains prétendirent que a faute en incombait à Sam Mendes dont la vision du spectacle était opposée à celle de Sondheim et Weidman.

They have had success in the past with Sondheim's "Assassins" and "Company", and now they have revived his 1987 musical "Into The Woods", which has both music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by James Lapine.

The original Broadway production had a cast of 21 women and just one man. It ran for 732 performances and won four Tony Awards. It had been given a London concert performance at the Festival Hall in 1992 with Jonathan Pryce and Liliane Montevecchi, and the resultant CD introduced the work to many enthusiasts in the UK. This was its first staged performance. It was praised for its sophistication and emotional depth, though many felt the music was too subtle and haunting, the mood too brittle and bitter-sweet to find a mass audience. Like Sondheim, this was specialist fare.

This production was the samae as the Broadway Production, except there was an intermission between Scene Seven and Scene Eight, and a new song in Scene Thirteen (called "No One Has Ever Loved Me" on the London concert recording, but not the same as the similarly titled selection on the Broadway recording). It is sung after the "Farewell Letter" by Giorgio in his confrontation with Doctor Tambourri.
The London production did not fare quite so well, in spite of rave notices for Maria Friedman and excellent ones for Michael Ball. The production was described as a “chamber opera” of such intensity that it would not be to everyone’s taste, but generally was highly praised and admired. It had a six month run, though at the end of the year it did receive the Evening Standard Award as the Best Musical of the Year.
